Post Sandy Construction May Help Economy

Hiring in the construction industry will get a boost in the process of rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy. Construction firms and contractors will hire to rebuild or renovate homes, buildings, roads, and bridges that have suffered damage. Sandy inflicted up to $50 billion in losses in property damage. Construction jobs are vital to the economy as they pay more than most U.S. private sector jobs. IT also spurs hiring for other jobs related to construction, like architects. Also stocks of home improvement retailers may see a rise. Boats and cars will also have to be replaced, which will cause a rise in manufacturing for those also. The rise in hiring will help, but it will only be a modest boost.
