Severe storms, tornado roar across Louisiana
A tornado touched down in the New Orleans suburb of Kenner.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A line of severe thunderstorms moving across southeast Louisiana flooded streets, downed trees and branches and caused thousands of power outages. A tornado was also reported. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
One of the area's major utility companies, Entergy, said on its website Wednesday that it had more than 32,000 customers without power around midday. Jefferson Parish had about 16,000 Entergy customers without power. New Orleans had more than 11,000.
The National Weather Service says the line contained heavy rain, frequent lightning and strong winds, prompting several tornado warnings. Residents of a neighborhood in the city of Kenner, a New Orleans suburb, reported damage to homes from a tornado.
The weather service confirmed that an EF-1 tornado hit Kenner, with winds estimated near 90 mph. The tornado was 1/2 mile long, and 50 yards wide.
By early afternoon, the worst of the storms appeared to have moved out of heavily populated areas and into coastal marshes and waters.
