According to nbcwashington.com, the strike knocked out communication between pilots and the tower around 2:30 p.m. eastern.
No word if anyone was injured or if there was any structural damage.
The airport sent out a series of tweets confirming bad weather in the area during the afternoon. Weather Channel meteorologists confirm frequent lightning strikes were reported near the airport between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. A severe thunderstorm watch is posted until 10 p.m. eastern.

About 4,000 people in eastern New York were without power as of 4 p.m. Thursday.
