New York City Tornado Watch

Parts of the New York City metro area were placed under severe thunderstorm warnings as a storm system moved through the Big Apple on Monday afternoon, dumping plenty of rainfall and producing some incredible images as dark clouds rolled overhead.

The same system knocked out power for about 12,000 customers in eastern New York. Downed trees caused headaches for commuters on NJ TRANSIT.

Before the storms unleashed sheets of rain, a few moments of nearly pitch-black skies gave NYC residents enough time to snap pictures of a rare strong thunderstorm, and we collected some of the best photos and videos below.
