Linda Weakening Quickly; Still Channeling Moisture Into the Desert Southwest

September 9, 2015

This graphic shows how Linda will push mid-level moisture (green shadings) into the Desert Southwest.

Current Status and Forecast:

  • Linda continues to weaken as a tropical storm and should become a remnant low by late Thursday or Friday.
  • Linda will continue to track northwest, remaining well west of Mexico's Baja peninsula.
  • Linda has triggered a surge of moisture into the U.S. Desert Southwest, leading to enhanced coverage of thunderstorms, there. This includes parts of southern Arizona and Southern California.
  • Flash flood watches have been issued for the deserts and the inland empire of Southern California.
  • Swells generated by Linda are currently producing high surf along parts of the Baja peninsula, and will eventually propagate to the beaches of Southern California as soon as Thursday.
  • Hurricane Linda's first round of rapid strengthening occurred during the Labor Day holiday weekend, intensifying from a 45 mph tropical storm into a Category 2 hurricane with 100 mph winds in 24 hours. It weakened slightly before rapid intensification occurred a second time Tuesday morning.
