Cold air from Canada could set the stage for wintry weather this weekend

Raleigh, N.C. — Tuesday will be a fairly typical December day before temperatures drop again, making this week more seasonal after a warm stretch of days.
Highs on Tuesday will be in the low to mid 50s, and the day will be mostly cloudy with a slight chance for some sprinkles or showers later in the day.
The cooler temperatures are the result of a cold front that moved in overnight, according to WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner.
A developing system bringing snow showers to West Virginia and Kentucky is moving east, and Virginia could see some flurries on Tuesday. That system is feeding colder air from Canada southeast and sets the environment for possible wintry weather in the Triangle on Saturday night and Sunday.
in the mid 40s and plenty of sunshine. There is a very small chance for a flurry or two mid-morning Wednesday, but accumulation would not be an issue.
Friday will be sunny and warmer, with a high in the low 50s, before the week's main weather event begins.
Rain or wintry precipitation is in the forecast for the weekend as lows fall into the 20s with highs in the low 40s. At this point, it's too early to tell for sure if it will snow or sleet, but the chance for wintry weather is greatest overnight Saturday and into Sunday, with higher chance to the west of the Triangle.
According to Gardner, it's up to the path of a low pressure system off the coast of Texas when it comes to whether or not we'll see snow this weekend.
Depending on the path the system takes, the viewing area could experience no snow at all, a wintry mix or some snow. Gardner said it's just too early to predict which will occur and where. One government model showed only a 10 percent chance of measurable precipitation in the Triangle area through Sunday.
"A couple things have to happen in order for it to snow," said Gardner. "Colder air has to be in place and the low has to be at just the right spot."
