Tracking a new lake effect snow situation. Winter weather ADVISORY east of Lake Ontario.

A Winter Weather ADVISORY is issued in this case because a spray of lake effect snow showers, flurries and at times steadier lake effect snow squalls will be over these counties causing accumulating snow. While total snow amounts are not expected to be extremely heavy, there should be enough snow to cause travel trouble. You will find a large difference in snowfall amounts. The weather can vary from locally heavy snow to flurries even within these counties.

Here is what we are expecting:
A spray of lake effect snow showers will develop east-northeast of Lake Ontario towards midnight tonight. This will primarily hit Jefferson and northern Lewis counties through the late night. Elsewhere in CNY, I am not expecting anything worse than some late night flurries. By 7 AM, portions of Jefferson and Lewis counties will see 1-3". Elsewhere, little to no accumulation will occur.

During the day Thursday, expect numerous snow showers east and northeast of Lake Ontario. This is where the most persistent and consistent and steadier snow will be. Elsewhere in CNY, there will be variable cloud cover, some intervals of sun, scattered flurries and passing inconsequential light snow showers. New snow between 7 AM Thursday and 6 PM Thursday will accumulate an additional 1-3" east-northeast of Lake Ontario with the highest amounts of 3-6" over the highest elevations of the Tug Hill Plateau and inside any stronger snow bands. Late in the day snow showers may bring a dusting to 1" to parts of CNY.

During Thursday night, steadier lake effect snow will occur during the evening east or east-southeast of Lake Ontario (north of Route 31) for a while. Then a cold front will shift winds to the northwest. This will bring a chance for a brief steadier snow shower or brief snow squall for CNY before diminishing to lighter scattered snow showers and flurries late at night and into Friday morning. New snow between 6 PM Thursday and 7 AM Friday should range an additional 2-4" for some higher elevations east of Lake Ontario and higher elevations to the south/southeast of Syracuse, to Trace-2" for the rest of CNY.

For the day Friday, expect a cold day with leftover flurries and a spray of minor scattered light snow showers tapering to some sunshine. New snow between 7 AM Friday and 5 PM Friday should be just another dusting to coating to an inch.

If your area has a winter weather advisory, here is what you should do:

Know which county you live in, and where you are in relation to steady snow.
While the amount of snow in the advisory area will not be overwhelming, enough snow will occur to cause snow covered and slippery conditions, especially on less treated and unplowed roads.
Have a winter storm kit ready in your car in case you are stranded.
Keep an eye on Interactive Doppler and Triple Doppler radars on CNYcentral.com.
