CHICAGO — The National Weather Service has cancelled a tornado warning for Chicago-area suburbs as a severe thunderstorm system moved through the area this afternoon.
Weather service officials say the storm that prompted the warnings earlier Sunday afternoon had weakened and no longer posed a threat of tornados.
The national weather agency had initially reported a tornado was possible as thunderstorms moved across Cook and DuPage counties. The warnings were supposed to remain in effect until 3 p.m. but were cancelled shortly before then.
Despite the cancellation, 50-mph winds and heavy rainfall was still expected.
