The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of Cook County and
many of the western suburbs.
The warning remains in effect until 9 p.m.
According to the weather service, severe thunderstorms were being tracked from Navy Pier to as far west as St. Charles. The storms were moving southeast at about 35 miles per hour.
The weather service also warned of hail the size of quarters and 70 mile per hour wind gusts were.
There were 96,300 customers in the Chicago area who lost power as the result of the storm, a ComEd spokesman said.
The storm caused organizers to evacuate the North Coast Music Festival at Union Park for two hours Friday.
About 5:30 p.m., officials ordered Union Park evacuated, according to a statement from festival organizers. All attendees were out of the festival with 20 minutes.
The three-day festival was originally scheduled to end at 10 p.m., but will run until 11 p.m. Friday to make up for time lost during the evacuation, the statement said.
