Tropical Depression Gabrielle Downraded- Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands Flood Threat Persists
All tropical storm warnings have been cancelled for Puerto Rico. The tropical storm warning has been downgraded to a watch for a part of the coast of the Dominican Republic.
Gabrielle's low-level center has become well displaced from the mid-level center, possibly due to wind shear. It also appears dry air has begun to take a toll on this system.
The combination of dry air, increasing wind shear, and interaction with land appears to spell an imminent demise of Gabrielle as a tropical cyclone. There is some potential for enough convection to reform the center farther east.
Despite this weaker trend, heavy rain, flash flooding and mudslides are still a concern from this system in parts of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Additional rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches with locally higher amounts are possible over the next few days across an area that's already two feet above average for year-to-date rainfall.
Gabrielle appears to be no threat to the mainland United States.
