Potential Record Ice on Lakes May Mean a Cooler Summer

This winter has been a doozy. It has broken many records as far as temperatures and snow accumulation go. Due to the severity of this winter, the Great Lakes have an extreme amount of ice cover. This cover will create a different temperature spectrum for the season to come. A Professor from Duluth says that this is the most ice coverage that we have had in over 20 years.

"Unlike a pond, the depth of the Great Lakes prevent it from being a completely frozen sheet of ice, but instead the ice atop the lakes can actually move with the wind, according to Austin. Due to the ability of the ice to move around, the thickness of the ice across the lakes vary and therefore researchers do not know how thick the ice is in all portions of the lake."

A positive aspect of this ice coverage is that it will replenish the lake levels come spring and summer.
