1974 Super Outbreak: 8 Things It Taught Us About Tornadoes


On April 3-4, 1974, 148 tornadoes tore through 13 states and Ontario, Canada, claiming over 300 lives in one of the nation's worst tornado outbreaks.
After this super outbreak 40 years ago, several important advances in both science and public awareness of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes were spurred. Some took two decades to fully implement; others were phased in more quickly.
Let's list the things we may take for granted today that were not in place during the 1974 Superoutbreak.
