A strong coastal low pressure system known as a nor'easter rushed ashore Thursday morning in New England, bringing coastal flooding, heavy rain and enough wind to take down trees and knock out power to thousands.
Trees were felled all over Boston and surrounding areas as winds gusted as high as 60 mph overnight Thursday. Coupled with wet soil and trees that are still mostly in full leaf, the gusts were enough to snap large branches and drop them onto the roads, or cars, below.
Local power companies are reporting about 10,000 customers without power in Massachusetts early Thursday afternoon – the most outages for any single state in this storm by far. Up to five inches of rain have fallen in some areas.
"The nor'easter will remain off the New England coast Thursday, bringing locally heavy rain to parts of the Northeast, with the heaviest rain in northern New England," said weather.com meteorologist Linda Lam. "The strongest winds will be found in New England through today with gusts up to 50 mph."
Lam also said the coasts of Maine, New Hampshire and northeastern Massachusetts could see minor flooding and some beach erosion.
