Tropical Storm Ana continues to move away from the most populated areas of Hawaii as it stays just below hurricane strength.
As of 11 a.m. HST Monday, Ana had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, just below the 74-mph threshold for hurricanes. The heaviest rain associated with Ana has moved out of Kauai and is on its way out of Niihau as Ana's center continues to move to the northwest.
Hurricane Ana was downgraded to a tropical storm Sunday afternoon as it passed southwest of Hawaii, sideswiping the island chain with heavy rain and high surf.
Ana made its closest approach to the Big Island of Hawaii when it was 155 miles southwest of Kailua-Kona at 5 a.m. EDT Saturday. As of 8 a.m. EDT Monday, Ana was about 250 miles west-southwest of Lihue, Hawaii.
Hurricane Ana had been upgraded from a tropical storm to a hurricane on Friday when it was in an area of favorable conditions (very warm water and a decrease in wind shear) in the central Pacific Ocean.
