"Preparing your family and home for a hurricane is the beginning of a potentially devastating experience. But surviving the storm itself hardly ensures a smooth recovery — the aftermath can be just as hazardous.
Even after a serious storm passes, there are still several health and safety concerns. As Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Isaac survivors can attest to, surviving the storm is only the beginning.
“There are numerous environmental health hazards after a disaster,” Paula Rupert, RN, MSN, FNP-BC, nurse practitioner at Houston Methodist Department of Surgery in Texas, told Weather.com.
Home clean up and restoration might top the list of priorities, but the health hazards of life after a hurricane require attention as well."
