RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The Black Hills area of South Dakota broke out of a weeklong heat wave with some severe weather.
The Rapid City Journal reports that rain and hail that reached the size of a baseball pounded the area Friday afternoon, and a tornado touched down briefly near Hermosa.
National Weather Service meteorologist Susan Sanders says it appears that the tornado lasted just a minute or two and didn't cause any damage.
An inch of rain fell in Rapid City within 45 minutes Friday afternoon, flooding many streets. Rapid Creek near the fairgrounds overflowed its banks.
At least one piece of hail the size of a baseball - 2.75 inches in diameter - fell three miles northeast of Hisega.
