A new plan that would cost as much as $12 billion has been
proposed as a solution for protecting the New York and New Jersey coasts, but
experts believe it may be the perfect way to keep the heavily-populated coast
from experiencing future disaster.
The proposal calls for artificial islands to be built along
the coastline that would lessen the impact of storm surge by absorbing the blow
from large storms, keeping the coast intact instead of suffering heavy damage
similar to that from Superstorm Sandy, which hit the area in late 2012.
Now, the proposal needs attention and funding from a region
that continues to recover from the calamity.
"We've discussed this with the governor's office of Recovery
and Resiliency and the Department of Environmental Protection, and they all
look at me like, 'Whoa! This is a big deal!" said Alan Blumberg, a
professor at New Jersey's Stevens Institute of Technology. "Yes, it is a
big deal. It can save lives and protect property."
