Typhoon Vongfong: 70 Percent of Rota Without Power, Structural Damage Minimal

As Typhoon Vongfong continued to strengthen Monday, it barreled toward Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Airlines canceled flights, schools closed and residents prepared for the storm's impacts.
The National Weather Service in Guam issued a warning of potentially disastrous impacts on the island of Rota. The eye of the typhoon passed over or near Rota between 3 and 4 a.m. local time Monday based on data from the NWS Doppler radar. Rota lies 45 miles northeast of Guam and is part of the Northern Mariana Islands.
According to the Associated Press, there were reports of power outages and minor flooding in some areas of Rota. Guam was also said to be experiencing sporadic power outages.
Ed Propst, a candidate for the Northern Mariana Islands' House of Representatives, reported debris, branches and leaves scattered across his yard. Propst, who grew up in Saipan and witnessed several storms, told the Associated Press, "I don't think we have had one this strong in a decade, or at least it feels like it.'
