Typhoon Man-yi Lashes Japan; Thousands Evacuate

TOKYO -- A powerful typhoon lashed Japan with torrential rain Monday, leaving two dead as it damaged homes and flooded parts of the country's popular tourist destination of Kyoto, where 260,000 people were ordered to evacuate to shelters. Typhoon Man-yi, packing wind speeds of 162 kilometers per hour (100 mph) Monday night, was centered off the northern coast and heading to the northern main island of Hokkaido, dumping more heavy rain. Dozens of people were injured. Police and disaster management officials said the body of a 72-year-old woman was dug out of the debris of her home, which was smashed by a mudslide the night before in Shiga prefecture, east of Kyoto. A 77-year-old woman was found dead in a mudslide in Fukui prefecture.
