Fall...our second severe weather season

Tornadoes often occur during the Fall with devastating results.  For instance, A F-4 tornado struck Bossier City on December 3rd, 1978 killing 2 and injuring 266. (Figure 2)  Storm damage added up to 100 million dollars.
31 years later on October 29th, 2009 another tornado struck the river cities.  (Figure 3)  The EF-2 tornado with nearly 110 mph winds damaged over 100 homes.
Most think Spring is the worst of our two severe weather seasons.  But, when it comes to tornadoes…Fall has a slight edge according to the Shreveport National Weather Service.  (Figure 4)
Ingredients that produce severe storms this time of year include a large temperature change from the north pole to the equator.
