Iceberg 5 Times the Size of Manhattan About to Break from Antartica

According to an article written on The Weather Channels website, scientists have recently discovered a large rift on the Pine Island Glacier that could cause a major ice breakaway. The rift currently extends 19 miles, but if it continues another six miles it could cause more icebergs to break away. If it were all to break off in one piece, it would be approximately 115 square miles. It is very common for calving to occur, but scientists are concerned with the frequency at which Pine Island is experiencing break aways. If this piece of ice were to break away, it would be the sixth largest to occur since 2001.
