Seattle's Famed Space Needle Struck by Lightning During Snowstorm

While a relatively rare occurrence, the strike was caught on camera during a storm that produced hail, snow and thunder throughout the afternoon.
In a tweet, officials at the Space Needle said lightning hit the tower around 3:45 p.m.  They told KIRO.com that lightning strikes the famous observatory tower several times each year.

Conceived by Edward E. Carlson and built in 1962 for the World's Fair, the structure rises 605 feet above the city and was built to withstand a wind velocity of 200 miles per hour, according to the Space Needle's website.
Weather forces the closure of the Space Needle from time to time, including a storm that hit the city on Columbus Day 1962. It also withstood a powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake in 2001.
