Thermometers again climbed above the freezing mark in usually frigid Interior Alaska, and forecasters say the unusually balmy temperatures are expected to persist throughout the week.
Temperatures at Fairbanks International Airport crested at 38 degrees overnight and reached 42 at Eielson Air Force Base before cooling somewhat during the day.
The average high on this date is 6 above zero and the average low is minus 9. The record high of 40 degrees was set in 1986.
Strong southerly winds with gusts of 80 mph and higher are expected through this evening, before calming and cooling overnight, according to the National Weather Service. Icy conditions are reported on Interior Alaska roads and power outages were reported in some areas along the Parks Highway on Monday.
However, another chinook event is expected late Tuesday bringing a slight chance of freezing rain to Fairbanks. The warmth is expected to continue throughout the week, with a cooling trend this weekend.
