At least 12 people have been pronounced dead and more than 200 fishermen needed to be rescued as Cyclone Ockhi hit India. It battered southern states with strong winds and flooding rainfall. According to the Indian Express, most deaths occured in the far southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, where five and seven fatalities were respectively reported.
Officials continued to search for at least 22 fishermen off of the coast that remained missing as of Friday, also reported by the Indian Express. Officials have stated that they have been able to rescue over 200 fishermen after their boats got caught up in the storm.
This cyclone also knocked out power and caused the tourist town of Kanyakumari to evacuate over 1,000 people. In Suchindram, floodwaters were reported to have entered the Thanumalayan Temple, built in the 17th century. Yet, it is still unknown if the floodwaters caused any significant damage to the temple.
