Super Typhoon Chaba will threaten lives and property across the Ryukyu Islands and mainland Japan this week. A northward shift in the track could threaten southern South Korea as well.
Chaba reached super typhoon status, strengthening to the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane on Monday afternoon, local time.
Damaging winds, torrential rain and seas will increase around Chaba's center, posing dangers to shipping interests.
Residents of the Ryukyu Islands, southern mainland Japan and southern South Korea need to prepare for the future typhoon to make a direct hit or pass dangerously close during the start of the week.
The Okinawa and Amami islands are at highest risk of being battered by destructive winds and flooding rainfall through Monday, local time. Seas will become dangerously rough and pound the coastline, which may cause flooding, especially north and east of Chaba’s center.
If Chaba makes a direct hit on any one of these islands, extensive wind damage and prolonged power outages can result. Wind gusts can reach to near 200 km/h (125 mph). Residents who venture outside during the height of the storm would be at risk of injury or death due to flying debris.
125-250 mm (5-10 inches) of rain may lead to extensive flooding in addition to the damaging wind.
After battering these islands, Chaba is then expected to curve toward mainland Japan and southern South Korea, still as a strong typhoon.
During this time, wind gusts of up to 130 km/h (80 mph) can cause damage across western Kyushu, including around Nagasaki. Damaging wind can also advance northward across southwestern Honshu and into Yamaguchi and Shimane.
