Severe Storms and Flash Flooding Threaten Plains, Midwest and South Early This Week

Severe thunderstorms will rumble through the Plains, Midwest and South early this week, potentially spawning damaging wind gusts, large hail and a few tornadoes.

This multi-day severe weather threat is being triggered by an area of low pressure that will move through the central states into midweek. Several bouts of thunderstorms will develop as that low-pressure system interacts with a moist atmosphere.

A downed tree killed a Boy Scout in north Georgia Monday when he was taking shelter from a thunderstorm underneath a tree at the Bert Adams Boy Scout Camp in Covington, Georgia, 11Alive.com reported. The tree collapsed on top of him, causing his death.

Also on Monday, one home was destroyed by the combination of falling trees and tree limbs in Harrison, Tennessee, just northeast of Chattanooga. Many other homes in the area were damaged by falling limbs.

Early Monday, a cluster of thunderstorms moved through northern Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas with strong wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph.
