Tropical Storm Hagupit (Ruby): Large Storm Slams Eastern Coast of Philippines And Leaves At Least 3 Dead

Typhoon Hagupit brought fierce winds and heavy rain ashore on the eastern islands of the Philippines Saturday evening local time -- knocking out power, sending hundreds of thousands into shelter and leaving at least three dead before downgrading to a Tropical Storm Monday.
Alexander Pama, disaster-response agency chief for the Philippines, announced two deaths at a news conference, according to the Associated Press. A 1-year-old girl and a 65-year-old man both died of hypothermia in central Iloilo province when the typhoon was at its strongest Saturday.
Interior Secretary Mar Roxas says that one person was killed by a falling tree in Dolores, where Hagupit first struck, according to ABS-CBN News.
The Associated Press reports that two women were injured by a falling tree in central Negros Oriental province.
Hagupit – which translates to "smash" in Filipino – remained a threat for millions in the Philippines, despite being downgraded to a tropical storm Monday morning. The storm, locally known as Ruby, was expected to track across the Philippines along a similar route Super Typhoon Haiyan took last November. That storm killed more than 7,000 and leveled villages in what was one of the planet's worst weather disasters of 2013.
"Even though Hagupit is down to tropical storm status, it's still a slow-moving tropical cyclone and that still means the potential for very heavy rainfall," said weather.com meteorologist Nick Wiltgen. "We're still forecasting over a foot of rain for some areas just east and southeast of Manila on the island of Luzon. Given the high population of the region still in Hagupit's path, it's still too early to breathe a sigh of relief."
