Japan Faces Severe Flooding After Heavy Rain in the East

TOKYO — Heavy rain from a tropical storm caused severe flooding in eastern Japan on Thursday, and television footage showed rescuers airlifting people who were stranded after river embankments collapsed.
Helicopters were used to pull people to safety in Joso, a city north of Tokyo in Ibaraki Prefecture, where levees broke along the Kinu River, according to local news reports. Footage on television showed floodwaters inundating houses and washing away some structures.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency announced early Thursday evening that one person was missing, that 21 people were injured and that about 1,000 houses were damaged or flooded. There were no immediate reports of deaths.
