Chicago-area residents can expect warmer than average summer months this year as El Nino is likely transitioning to La Nina conditions, according to the National Weather Service.
La Nina, or lower water-surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean, usually has stronger effects in the winter, said National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Birk.
But historic records indicate summers with La Nina conditions were warmer than average, Birk said.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts La Nina conditions are likely to develop in June through August, with even higher chances in the early fall.
