The Met Office issued a severe weather warning for northern and eastern England warning people to expect up to four inches of snow in the next 48 hours.
Freezing Arctic air had already sent temperatures plummeting below zero over the weekend, and now a new front moving from the Atlantic was predicted to hit the cold air, causing heavy snow.
Forecasters said snow would settle on higher ground in Western Scotland where three inches was expected from late Tuesday morning while low lying.
But on early Wednesday morning up to four inches could fall in eastern areas of England, the Met Office warned, and urged householders to be prepared.  Counties as far south of Nottinghamshire could also be affected.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Eddy Carroll said: “Snow is likely to fall on ground over 200m over Tuesday and into Wednesday; this is not unusual for this time of year.
"Accumulations of 4-8cm could be seen in hilly areas in western Scotland. As the frontal system moves from west to east and temperatures drop overnight on Tuesday there is a chance that this snowfall could affect lower lying areas as far south as Nottinghamshire.
“We advise everyone to stay up to date with the latest Met Office forecasts and warnings on our app and website and plan ahead for the expected weather before it arrives”
