UK weather

A north-south weather divide will see parts of England shiver through what is expected to be the coldest evening of the autumn so far on Tuesday, as northern Scotland has warmer temperatures. Clear skies will contribute to overnight temperatures falling below freezing in many areas below Manchester - with forecasters predicting the mercury could drop to as low as -9C (15.8F) in some places - but clouds will keep the weather feeling milder further north.  The cold snap that is sending temperatures plummeting has prompted health officials to warn that sub-zero conditions can be fatal, urging people to look out for elderly relatives and neighbours during the chilly snap.
Met Office meteorologist Mark Wilson said daytime temperatures on Tuesday would struggle to get higher than 6C (43F) on a sunny day in England and Wales, with Scotland expected to experience milder conditions of up to 9C (48F). While it is unlikely that overnight temperatures for the entire UK will drop lower than the coldest of the season so far - which was -12C (10F) in parts of Scotland last week - Britain could get its coldest night of autumn on Tuesday night with temperatures in some areas forecast to get as low as -9C (15.8F). Mr Wilson said: "We're pretty confident it will be one of, if not the, coldest night of the autumn so far." He added: "For the bulk of the country, it's going to be a cold day. Across much of the southern parts of the country we're expecting harsher frost." Met Office spokeswoman Emma Sillitoe said clear skies will contribute to overnight temperatures in the minus figures for areas below Manchester. "We could see minus 6C (21F) or minus 7C (19F) around the Midlands and quite widely below freezing, so even in London we could see minus 2C (28F)," she said. Meanwhile, cloud coverage further north will keep temperatures above freezing, with Inverness reaching 5C (41F) overnight. While the overnight frost forecast for the central and southern regions was "fairly unusual", it would be unlikely to pose any real risk or disruption to the public, Mr Wilson said. Monday night saw lows similar to those predicted for Tuesday night. South Newington in Oxfordshire was the coldest place in the UK overnight, with a temperature of minus 7.5C (18.5F), while Bala, in Gwynedd, north-west Wales, reached minus 6.2C (21F). Both places saw their coldest nights so far this season. The chilly conditions will continue into Wednesday morning.
