FORT COLLINS, Colo. – As Colorado firefighters continue to battle the High Park Fire near Fort Collins, Colo., some residents evacuated from some areas gained access to their properties Wednesday, while others were asked to be prepared to go at a moment's notice.
During a private briefing, evacuees were issued credentials that granted them access to their properties. The credentials were designed to keep "looky loos" and the media out, said sheriff's spokesman Nick Christensen.
Dangerous conditions have kept firefighters and county personnel from assessing the burn area to determine the status of all the residences it contains, said Incident Cmdr. Bill Hahnenberg.
The High Park Fire has grown to 46,600 acres, or nearly 73 square miles since Saturday. The fire was 10% contained entering its fifth day, Hahnenberg said.
