Weather alert: Possible tropical system developing in Gulf of Mexico means more rain ahead

Weather alert: Possible tropical system developing in Gulf of Mexico means more rain ahead

More rain is in store for South Florida, but exactly how much more?
“The million dollar question is in the Gulf of Mexico,” said meteorologist Barry Baxter, with the National Weather Service in Miami.
Baxter said there is a 30 percent chance a tropical system will form in the Gulf of Mexico over the weekend, but “at this point, it’s too early to say.”
The system’s pattern appears to be pointing towards the panhandle and northern Florida, but that could change, said Baxter. The storm could make its way into Central Florida.
Rain coverage will depend on whether or not that system develops. As of Thursday morning, the chance of rain will be 40 percent Thursday night and 50 percent on Friday. That number looks like it will go up to 60 percent for Saturday and Sunday.
Wind speed will also increase into the weekend, with some rip currents developing on the east coast.
Baxter said there are no advisories in place, yet.
“We need to monitor the tropics for the next couple of days,” he said.
