Cyclone closes in on WA as eastern Australia is set to swelter

WAVES and winds were today lashing northwest Australia while a wave of heat will engulf the eastern states again tomorrow.
A cyclone off Western Australia's north coast was intensifying today as it came closer to land, prompting authorities to warn residents to prepare their homes and emergency kits.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) warned the category three cyclone Narelle is expected to be upgraded to a level four later today as it continues towards Northwest Cape, near Karratha.
The bureau predicts gales with gusts to 100km/h in coastal areas tomorrow, along with thunderstorms, isolated heavy rainfall and possibly even stronger winds developing through to Saturday.
On the other side of the wide brown land, emergency services already battling bush fires are bracing for a second wave of extreme heat.

The BoM has forecast temperatures in the mid-40s in some parts of NSW for Friday, with even hotter forecasts for Saturday.
