Cool-down headed to Coast; freeze unlikely

Cool-down headed to Coast; freeze unlikely

Fear not the vortex: Cold air is headed toward South Mississippi, but the polar blast isn't likely to return anytime soon.
Forecasts show a slow-moving cold front will reach the Coast starting this afternoon, along with clear skies and dry weather.
The coldest day of the week will most likely be Wednesday, said Gavin Phillips with the National Weather Service in Slidell, with highs in the upper 50s and lows in the mid- to upper 30s.
The Salvation Army cold weather shelters in Gulfport and Pascagoula will be open Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The Hancock County Emergency Management Agency does not yet have plans to open the Bay St. Louis shelter.
Phillips said the center isn't expecting to issue any freeze watches or warnings and the week is predicted to be only slightly below average temperatures.
"This actual week is probably going to be pretty close to normal if not a little bit above if you could the whole week," he said.
That's good news for Mississippi, which -- along with Alabama -- had the second-coldest November ever, according to a National Weather Service report released Monday. The country as a whole saw its 16th-coldest November since the data started being recorded in 1895.
The NWS Climate Prediction Center is expecting a warmer-than-normal December nationwide, with a slight possibility of below-average temperatures for the Gulf Coast.
