DeLay estimated the tornadoes remained in progress for at least a half-hour, and spent an extended period of time growing before they became rain-wrapped.
"This is the storm that I said I wanted; a supercell with a tornado underneath," he told weather.com. "I wanted to show how huge the supercell is, compared to a tornado."
Because of his desire to get the full storm in a single shot, DeLay doesn't chase storms to get as close as he can. Capturing an image such as this one requires a different method of chasing than the photographers who strive to get as close as possible to document a tornado, he said.
Last week, DeLay's strategy paid huge dividends. Though his photography has made news in the past, the last week has brought him hundreds of new followers on social media and his supercell image was featured on dozens of websites around the world.
