National Weather Festival scheduled Saturday in Norman

The annual event features a storm chaser car show, hourly weather balloon launches, tours of the National Weather Center and its federal forecasting offices and abundant children's activities

— The sixth annual National Weather Festival is scheduled 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the National Weather Center, 120 David L. Boren Blvd., on the University of Oklahoma south research campus.

The free, public event often attracts visitors from throughout Oklahoma and other states.
The event will feature tours of the National Weather Center, including its National Weather Service forecast areas, a wide range of children's activities, hourly weather balloon launches, amateur radio demonstrations and a storm chaser car show.
"We've changed up the categories and the judging and already have 35 entrants," said Keli Tarp, federal NOAA Weather Partners spokeswoman in Norman. "The Dominator from the Discovery Channel's Storm Chasers show will be on display along with research vehicles used by scientists in the VORTEX2 tornado study."
Storm-chasing vehicles in this year's show, which will end at noon, will be placed in four divisions: storm spotter, student/researcher, professional, and TV chaser.
