GOES EAST, the U.S. weather satellite that tracks the East Coast was put into standby mode after malfunctions were reported on Sunday. Vibrations were detected making the images that the satellite sends back defected.

However, The Weather Channel got word from NOAA's office of Satellite Operations on Monday that the forecast will not be affected and they have an extra satellite on back up.

The other functions that the satellite provides such as search & rescue, and other communications were not effected by the defect. According to NOAA, "The main mission is carried out by the primary instruments, the Imager and the Sounder. The Imager is a multichannel instrument that senses radiant energy and reflected solar energy from the Earth's surface and atmosphere. The Sounder provides data to determine the vertical temperature and moisture profile of the atmosphere, surface and cloud top temperatures, and ozone distribution." The vibrations on Sunday only impacted the Imager and Sounder.
