CHICAGO — Almost 400 flights were canceled at Chicago airports due to stormy weather Wednesday afternoon.
Because of rain and low visibility, travelers experienced delays averaging about 45 minutes for flights in and out of O'Hare Airport and delays of about one hour for Midway Airport flights, according to the city's aviation department. About 375 flights were canceled at O'Hare, and about a dozen flights were canceled at Midway.
Thunderstorms and fog rolled in and out of the area in the morning, producing heavy rain and areas of reduced visibility at times. More storms are expected to hit the area, according to the National Weather Service.
The service issued a hazardous outlook for the Chicago area that warned of thunderstorms and potentially heavy rain at times on Wednesday afternoon and night. The rain could lead to rising streams and rivers overnight, according to the service.
Scattered rain showers are expected Thursday and Friday and possibly a few thunderstorms for the weekend, according to the service. There is a chance that an unseasonable rain-snow mix could hit the city Friday morning.
