Shivering Start to April

April has been off to a chilly start across much of the central and northern U.S., with below-average temperatures from the Midwest to the Northeast and parts of the Southern Plains.
Below-average temperatures will persist into Wednesday in much of the East and South.
Rain-cooled air will keep a blob of 40s and low 50s for highs across the Southern Plains, even as folks much farther north (Billings, Rapid City) rebound to upper 60s and low 70s.
And Thursday will be an ugly surprise for those not paying attention to the forecast -- a large area of rain across the South will push temperatures even farther below average in Atlanta and Charlotte. Readings may struggle to get much above 50 on Thursday along that stretch of I-85.
(FORECAST LOWS: Thursday morning)
For warm-weather lovers, though, time is on your side: ultimately, a much warmer pattern has to take over, and that looks to happen during the second week of April.
