(WBNG Binghamton) New York's Severe Storm Awareness Week runs from April 26 - May 2. Members of the National Weather Service want to make sure residents are prepared.
According to experts, this time of year shows the greatest potential for damaging tornadoes, flooding and lightning strikes in the Twin Tiers.
"In fact, four years ago on this date, we had a major tornado outbreak that made its way up to southern New York,” Dave Nicosia, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said. “We can have severe weather earlier in the season, but climatologically our severe weather really picks up at the end of May and it last through the summer and tapers off in September."
Each day this week, the National Weather service will be focusing on a different aspect of severe weather events. Presentations on how to be prepared for when disaster strikes are available here.
