Cold Weather Asthma Triggers

Cool, dry, wintertime air has been a danger to asthma patients for years.  Due to low temperatures and a lack of moisture in the air, children and adults who suffer from this have found it very there is a higher risk in Winter months.  Hypertension of the airways is the cause and constricts normal breathing due to the shock of the temperature.  This shock is compared to getting out of the ocean on a hot summers day (Schachter).

Just like when moisture evaporates from your skin on a warm day, the same thing happens to your lungs.  This type of asthma attack is closely related to exercise induced attacks which occur when an airway "dries through rapid, heavy breathing".  Be careful in the coming months and pay attention to coughing or hard breaths.
