Will Climate Change Make Weather TOO Extreme?

Geographers at the University of Virginia and the University of Nottingham by the names of Robert E. Davis and Simon N. Gosling seem to think so. Though, it is not just the temperature that has them worried. Unexpected weather is what really needs to be, you guessed it, expected. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences looked into how the fluctuation of temperatures over a single summer affected mortality in vulnerable populations. The few months of rapidly changing conditions--fluctuating between hotter and cooler weather--resulted in more deaths, regardless of how hot it was overall. This is especially true in areas where people are not accustomed to rapid changes.

Climate change is expected to lead to more unexpected weather, even more so depending on the region. For example, climate models have suggested that Boston will have much hotter temperatures in the coming decades with variation staying more or less the same. Dallas is predicted to have average temperatures rise with variability going down. Though, it's hard to know for sure what will happen as the climate changes, just be sure to expect the unexpected.
