Winter Storm Bruce to Spread Snow & Strong Winds From the Plains to Great Lakes. Blizzard Warnings Issued in Midwest

Winter Storm Bruce Current Conditions

Winter Storm Bruce will spread snow and strong winds from the Central Plains into the Great Lakes area; which will contribute to blizzard conditions and dangerous travel in certain areas.

As of now, Winter Storm Bruce is bringing strong winds and snow across Kansas and southeastern Nebraska into northwestern Missouri, southern Iowa and northern Illinois.

Blizzard conditions have been reported in parts of Kansas, southeast Nebraska, and southwest Iowa. Certain areas of Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska have experienced whiteout conditions because of heavy snow. According to a tweet sent out by the Kansas State Trooper department, parts of Kansas has experienced snow-packed, icy roads with drifting, and winds of up to 50 mph.

Chicago and Milwaukee are also included in the winter storm warning with a combination of snow and high winds that will carry from Sunday evening into early Monday.

What to expect from Bruce:

Bruce is expected to bring wind-driven snow or rain changing into snow that will expand northeastward from Kansas and Nebraska to Northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin; leading to blizzard or near blizzard conditions, with limited visibility and causing major travel problems in parts of the Plains and Midwest; including possible road closures.

Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches of snow per hour is expected in those areas with the possibility of Thundersnow in heavier areas with wind gust of 40 to 50 mph in the central Plains,  to southwest shore of Lake Michigan. Sunday night snow and strong winds are expected to expand into lower Michigan while continuing in parts of northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, southeast Iowa, and northeast Missouri.

By early Monday through Monday night snow and gusty winds will continue to affect parts of the Great Lakes, but will be winding down early Monday in the Chicago and Milwaukee metro area. However, the morning commute is still expected to be hazardous in those areas.

Bruce is expected to spread into the I-95 corridor of the Northeast, and snow or rain changing to snow may move into upstate New York and Northern New England by later Monday into Monday night. By Tuesday snow associated with Bruce will continue in Northern NE and upstate NY.

SnowFall Forecast

Heaviest snow accumulations will be along a path from northeast Kansas and southeast Nebraska to northern Missouri, southern Iowa, far northern Illinois, and far southern Wisconsin. Most of Northern IL will pick up more than a foot of snow. Parts of lower Michigan could see snowfall near 5 inches of snow.

Higher terrain of Northern New England and upstate New York will see more than 5 inches of snow and some areas could see 12 inches of snow.

Heavier totals of snow are possible due to LES east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
