Earthquake off South Japan Leads to Fire in Taiwan That Kills 1
An earthquake off the southern Japanese coast on Monday led to a fatal house fire in Taiwan that killed one and caused Japanese officials to order evacuations.
Initially the quake sparked fears of a tsunami, but advisories were lifted after an hour.
In Taipei, Taiwan, the earthquake shook buildings and exploded a transformer box. According to Taiwan's fire and rescue agency, that explosion sparked a house fire that killed one person.
Taiwan's official Central News Agency gave the age of the deceased as 84, but offered no other details. One other person was injured in the fire, the government said.
Footage from Taiwanese television broadcaster TBS showed signs and lights swinging from the ceiling of a newsroom in Taipei. Fire crews sealed off a multi-level parking lot in central Taipei after the mechanical parking tower failed, damaging 11 cars.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the magnitude-6.8 quake's epicenter was at a shallow point in seas east of Taiwan and south of Okinawa, near the Yonaguni islands. It said no tsunami was detected.
Television footage of the area showed calm seas, but as a precaution schoolchildren in some low-lying parts of islands in the region were evacuated to safer locations.
Japan reacts intensely to tsunami risks following the massive destruction caused by a March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 18,500 people.
Taiwan's worst earthquake was a magnitude-7.3 temblor that struck the center of the island in September 1999, killing 2,415 people.
Rain Helps Firefighters Tame 2,000-Acre Brush Fire in Miami-Dade County
Rain fell in Florida's Miami-Dade County Tuesday, helping firefighters tame a brush fire that had grown to more than 2,100 acres.
"We caught a little bit of a rain shower and that's really helped out," crews told CBS Miami Tuesday afternoon.
The Grand Lake Fire has been burning since Sunday in West Kendall, a Miami suburb. Temperatures near 90 along with high winds gusting up to 26 mph helped feed the fire Monday, forcing evacuations at nearby businesses and air quality alerts.
As many as 10 structures were threatened, including the Lincoln Marti Daycare, CBS Miami reports. The 25 students were moved to another school.
Employees at The Pit Bar-B-Q restaurant on SW 8th street, a business that's been there more than 50 years, were also told to leave the business as a precaution.
As of Tuesday evening, the fire was considered 70 percent contained.
The Florida Fores Service said it was one of 19 active wildfires across the Sunshine State Tuesday. Miami-Dade County is considered to be in moderate to severe drought, according to the latest Drought Monitor.
Phoenix Hot Car Death First of 2015
A Phoenix, Arizona, toddler died Monday afternoon after police say his father left him inside a hot car following a round of heavy drinking.
Authorities say James Koryor, 41, took his son into a liquor store, purchased a bottle of gin and then drank the alcohol while driving home, the Associated Press reported. When he got home, Koryor allegedly went inside and fell asleep, leaving 2-year-old Alpha Koryor and his 5-year-old brother inside. The older child escaped the hot car; Alpha was later found unconscious by his mother.
Temperatures soared as high as 93 degrees in the Phoenix area Monday afternoon, according to Weather Underground data.
Koryor has been charged with manslaughter and child endangerment, according to AZCentral.com. Police told KPHO.com that the child was likely inside the stifling car for more than two hours.
Koryor was supposed to be taking the two boys to get haircuts, the report added.
"We're looking at a criminal element ... because we have an individual who has been drinking while he's trying to parent, and it just doesn't mix," Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump told AZCentral.com.
On average, 37 children die of heat strokes while trapped in hot cars every year, according to data compiled by Dr. Jan Null from 1998 through 2014. Last year, 30 children died while inside sweltering cars, the San Jose State University study reported.

High Winds Tear Train Off Bridge
http://www.weather.com/news/news/train-off-bridge-near-new-orleans
Thunderstorms carting powerful winds and heavy rain created a jaw-dropping scene in the New Orleans area Monday, as high winds pushed train cars right off an elevated train track.
It happened in Jefferson Parish around 10:30 a.m. A TV crew for WGNO was rolling video of the Huey P. Long Bridge in Elmwood when it happened.
The video shows the heavy rain coming down, and within seconds, the train cars roll off the bridge, and plunge to the ground.
No injuries were reported, but the surrounding area was littered with debris.
Scientists Make Stunning Discovery Beneath Yellowstone National Park Supervolcano
http://www.weather.com/science/nature/news/yellowstone-national-park-supervolcano-largest-magma-reservoir-discovery
A massive, magma-filled secret was recently discovered under Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, a discovery that could mean larger eruptions for the park’s supervolcano.
Researchers from the University of Utah uncovered a gargantuan magma reservoir containing hot, sponge-like rock, as well as some molten rock, that dwarfs a previously known magma chamber.
The findings were recently published in the journal Science and revealed the chamber holds enough magma to fill the Grand Canyon over 11 times, the Tech Times said.
Scientists discovered the chamber while mapping the subterranean plumbing system below the supervolcano, Sciencemag.org reported.
Hsin-Hua Huang, study author and seismologist at the University of Utah, said, “For the first time, we have imaged the continuous volcanic plumbing system under Yellowstone. That includes the upper crustal magma chamber we have seen previously, plus a lower crustal magma reservoir that has never been imaged before and that connects the upper chamber to the Yellowstone hotspot plume below.”
The discovery is what Geophysicist Peter Cervelli describes as the "missing link" between the plume and magma chamber, says Sciencemag.com.
If an eruption was to happen, the giant magma chamber could intensify the event, but study co-author Robert B. Smith said the chances of an incident occurring are 1 in 700,000.
Smith also noted the Yellowstone supervolcano has the potential to create a cataclysmic situation, as seen during three eruptions in the structure’s ancient history, which spread volcanic ash over much of North America. The volcano’s last known eruption sent more than 8,000 times the debris of the 1980 Mt. St. Helens’ eruption careening in all directions, according to the Tech Times.
In the end, these new details will allow for a better understanding of the volcano's inner workings and will provide for a better look at future hazards.
Three Big Weather Changes: 100s in the Southwest, Break From Southern Storms, Northeast Gloom Departs
Three Big Weather Changes: 100s in the Southwest, Break From Southern Storms, Northeast Gloom Departs
http://www.weather.com/forecast/national/news/three-big-weather-changes-this-week
The northern branch of the jet stream will reconfigure itself this week, allowing for some significant weather changes to occur from coast-to-coast. This includes a big warm-up in the West and Plains, a break from stormy weather in the South and some warmer temperatures in the Northeast.
Below is our in-depth look at the big changes coming your way.
#1.) 100s in the Southwest; Midwest Warm-Up

Midweek Weather Pattern
The jet stream will lift northward allowing warm temperatures to takeover in the West and Plains.
A southward dip in the jet stream across the West and the Plains to start the week will be replaced by an upper-level ridge by midweek. The end result is that temperatures will be on an upward swing across these regions. In fact, highs in the 100s are not out of the question in the Desert Southwest, while upper 70s and low 80s return to the northern Plains.
Specifics:
- Phoenix: After topping out in the middle 70s on Sunday, it will be near 100 degrees Thursday and Friday. The average first 100-degree day in Phoenix occurs around May 2.
- Billings, Montana: Sunday's high was only 41 degrees. Temperatures will be in the 70s on Tuesday and low 80s on Wednesday.
- Minneapolis/St. Paul: Following cooler-than-average conditions much of last week, highs in the upper 60s or 70s are expected this week.
Absolutely Devasted: Two Dead In Illinois Tornadoes
Two Dead In Illinois Tornadoes
The tornado that left two people dead and dozens of homes destroyed in central Illinois Thursday spanned nearly 20 miles and delivered winds of up to 200 mph, the National Weather Service said Friday, classifying it as an EF4 — the second most intense classification on the tornado rating scale.
In central Illinois, residents were carefully sifting through huge piles of debris in the "absolutely devastated" town of Fairdale, the scene of one of two tornadoes late Thursday. Two people were killed there, according to authorities.
One of the victims was identified Friday as Geraldine M. Schultz, 67. Another woman was discovered Friday afternoon, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner said Friday, and identified by the county coroner's office as 69-year-old Jacklyn Klosa. The two women lived next door to each other, according to NBC Chicago. The women were friends and Schultz, known as "Geri," would sometimes drive Klosa to medical appointments, according to The Associated Press.

2015 Tornado Season Is Much Quieter Than Normal: Weather Channel

This year's tornado season is off to a slow start, despite last week's deadly twisters that devastated an Illinois town, forecasters said Tuesday.
The tornado count is 59 percent below average for the year-to-date, thanks mostly to the bitterly cold conditions that gripped the nation, keeping out the warm and moist Gulf Coast air needed to set off the spiraling winds.
"It's the flipside of the very cold winter we've just had," Weather Channel lead meteorologist Kevin Roth said. "The never-ending cold weather systems kept the southern air away for much longer than normal. What was bad news for some has been good news for others. It has been a really slow start to the tornado season."
January saw 25 confirmed tornadoes compared to the average of 40 while February had only two compared to the typical 36, Roth said. March saw 12 compared to the average of 78.
However, Thursday alone saw 17 confirmed tornadoes — including one that spanned nearly 20 miles and delivered winds of up to 200 mph, killing two people and destroying dozens of homes in Fairdale, Illinois.

April Blizzard Causes 70-Vehicle Pile-Up on Wyoming Interstate
As many as 70 vehicles piled up in one spot of a Wyoming interstate Thursday after a heavy April storm dropped almost 10 inches of snow on the area, authorities said.
An almost 150-mile-long stretch of Interstate 80 remained closed in both directions Thursday afternoon between Cheyenne in southeast Wyoming and Rawlins in the central part of the state because of treacherous, slick conditions that caused accidents across the area, officials said. The worst spot was near mile post 342, between Cheyenne and Laramie, two of the state's major population centers.
The state Highway Patrol said three major accidents happened at that location within just a few hours, the first at 11:22 a.m. ET (1:22 p.m. ET) in blizzard conditions. All told, as many as 50 commercial vehicles and 20 passenger vehicles were piled up at the scene, it said.
No deaths were reported, but the Highway Patrol said, "but multiple injuries have been confirmed." Details on the injuries weren't immediately available.
State Transportation Dept. traffic cameras showed that a long line of trucks and cars remained stalled at that location late in the afternoon:
Mile Wide Tornado Roars Through Texas
http://www.nbcnews.com/news/weather/extremely-dangerous-tornado-spotted-north-texas-n348746
A mile-wide tornado touched down in north-central Texas as a storm system swept through with large hail and damaging winds, the National Weather Service said, promising more severe weather on Monday.
The storm knocked out power to more than 30,000 people in Texas, according to online reports compiled from local power companies. Austin Energy reported the most affected, with 7,600 without power.
After moving through the town of Rio Vista, the tornado moved east into rural parts of Johnson County, Emergency Management Director Jamie Moore told NBC News. The tornado was about a mile wide when it was first spotted, he said.
The twister was spotted about 10:44 p.m. near Covington and near Cleburne State Park, about 25 miles south of Fort Worth, according to the weather service. "This is a particularly dangerous situation," it said.
Johnson County Emergency Management reported that semi-trailer trucks had been overturned, roofs were blown off, and roads were flooded, according to The Weather Channel. The agency also reported damage around the Rio Vista area, NBC Dallas-Fort Worth said. It said crew would be assessing the scale of the damage on Monday.
Tennis ball-size hail was reported near Glen Rose and Dinosaur Valley State Park, while softball-size hail damaged several vehicles near Stephenville, The Weather Channel reported.
