Thunderstorms on Tuesday night flooded roads and left thousands of homes without power, authorities said.
The storms brought heavy rain to the area, with Midway Airport recording nearly two inches of rain in an hour and half late Tuesday evening, said Mike Bardou, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville.
There were reports of sporadic flash flooding on underpasses in the city, Bardou said.
The storm also interrupted power service for tens of thousands of area households.

People in two states were taking shelter amid wailing warning sirens Sunday as tornadoes were confirmed to have touched down in Kansas and Oklahoma as part of an extreme weather system plowing through the nation's midsection.

The National Weather Service in Wichita warned of a large and “extremely dangerous and potentially deadly” tornado late Sunday.  Weather spotters confirmed the tornado 7 miles northwest of Haysville and moving northeast at 30 mph, the Weather Service said.
