Big Sky Country is accustomed to high wind events thanks in part to the Rocky Mountains, but certain counties are more prone to damaging wind events than others.
Tornadoes typically make big headlines when they strike because of their ominous shape and destruction.
However, straight-line winds produced by severe thunderstorms are capable of producing similar damage to that of tornadoes and can wreak havoc on a wider scale.
These winds are produced by the downward momentum in a thunderstorm and can reach speeds over 100mph.
Straight-line wind events require slightly different ingredients than tornadoes, but are often produced by the same type of thunderstorm.
In Montana, eastern Montana typically sees the required conditions for damaging wind events to occur.
Looking back to 1950, Valley County and Yellowstone County top the list when it comes to the most number of damaging wind events.
