Severe weather strikes Western Alaska
Storm floods towns, damages facilities

ANCHORAGE - Communities across the coast of Western Alaska continue to recover from a Sunday storm that washed away beaches and flooded towns.
Early Monday morning, winter weather warnings remained in effect across the state. The National Weather Service issued freezing rain advisories for the Kuskokwim Delta and Lower Kuskokwim Valley, and coastal flood warnings for the Western Arctic coast, the Northern Arctic coast, the Chukchi Sea coast and parts of Norton Sound. Winter storm warnings remain in effect for the Beaufort Sea coast through Monday evening.
Unalakleet residents said rising sea water trapped some people in their homes Sunday and swamped several other buildings. In Shaktoolik, surging tides washed away sections of beach. Flooding in Kotlik damaged utility lines and pushed chunks of ice into the road.
While much of the severe weather had subsided by Monday morning and several NWS flood warnings were cancelled, Western Alaskan communities are left picking up the pieces.
