While there’s only a slight risk of severe weather in the Midlands today, that still means there’s a chance of strong winds and a scattered tornado or two.
But the most likely impact will be from heavy rains — as much as 2 inches in the Midlands and more in the Upstate.
The low pressure system that has caused tornados as it has worked its way across the Midwest and Southeast is moving extremely slowly. As the front reaches South Carolina today, the National Weather Service expects rain and thunderstorms to begin in the afternoon and continue well into Thursday.
The national Storm Prediction Center puts the Midlands at slight risk of severe weather, including lightning, 50-60 mph gusts and heavy rain. Conditions aren’t expected to be conducive for a widespread tornado outbreak, but as with most of these types of thunderstorms, isolated funnel clouds are possible.
Because spring rains have saturated many wetlands in the area, localized flooding is likely for the next two days in areas that typically flood. And because even heavier rain — 3-5 inches — is expected in the Upstate, the rivers in the Midlands could remain near flood stage for several days. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the Upstate.
