World Begins 2014 with unusual number of extreme weather events

Since the start of 2014 there has been many severe and unusual weather events occurring.  For example, there has been heatwaves in Slovenia and Australia, snow in Vietnam, and the return of the polar vortex to North America.  Other abnormalities have happened as well, for example, Britain having the wettest winter in 250 years and temperatures in Russia and the Arctic that have been 10 degrees C over what is normal.
